GOAL APPLAUDS GOVERNOR’S COUNCIL’S BI-PARTISAN EFFORT TO DISCOVER TRUTH ON JUDICIAL NOMINEE’S INVOLVEMENT IN ILLEGAL ENFORCEMENT ACTION
Renews Request That Baker Withdraw Nomination
NORTHBOROUGH, MA – The Gun Owners’ Action League (GOAL) applauds the bi-partisan Governor’s Council who yesterday grilled Chris Barry-Smith, Gov. Baker’s judicial nominee for the state Superior Court, on his involvement with AG Healey’s July 2016 attack on the civil rights of hundreds of thousands of Massachusetts families that own firearms. Through hours of persistent and fair scrutiny, Barry-Smith admitted under oath to being at the center of the enforcement decision that criminalized the sale of legally sold firearms and rendered thousands of law-abiding, licensed gun owners felons-in-waiting overnight.
“This man admitted under oath to being complicit in a politically motivated attack on the civil rights of over 400,000 gun owning families in Massachusetts,” said Jim Wallace, GOAL’s Executive Director. “On its face, this fact makes it self-evident why he should have never been nominated, let alone confirmed, as a judge for the Commonwealth. As a judge one must respect the civil rights of all citizens, regardless of their political views.”
GOAL has called on the Governor to withdraw his nomination and the Governor’s Council to vote down Barry-Smith’s judicial nomination due to his participation in the office’s action that invented an entirely new definition for so-called “assault” weapons. As AG Healey’s first assistant, GOAL believes that Barry-Smith’s complicity in suppressing the 2nd Amendment civil rights of almost half a million Massachusetts residents, plus his complete lack of trial experience, renders his judicial qualifications highly suspect.
Monday, 10/11/16 Alert Update: Please continue contacting the members of the Governors Council and urge them not to nominate Christopher Barry-Smith to the Superior Court. As part of AG Healey’s staff he has been an active participant in obfuscating FOIA requests, and worse, attacking a civil right. We cannot expect a fair trial from Barry-Smith. Please call them, then follow it up with a hand written letter. The council will meet on 10/26/16 to decide on Barry-Smith. Please see below for more information including contact info.
Governor Baker Aligns with AG Healey – Rewards Healey’s Staff
On July 20, 2016 Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey and her staff launched a politically motivated campaign of confusion, fear, and intimidation against hundreds of thousands of families and individuals. Healey invented an entirely new set of definitions for the Commonwealth’s firearm laws that turned hundreds of thousands of lawful citizens into felons in waiting.
Initially, Governor Charlie Baker supported the Attorney General’s attack on civil rights, but later attempted to step back from it. Now, lawful families and individuals discover that Governor Baker is rewarding Healey’s staff with judicial appointments.
In a recent State House News Service story, Governor Baker announced he was nominating AG Healey’s first assistant attorney general, Christopher Barry-Smith for a Superior Court judgeship. The article also mentioned several other Healey staff members that Governor Baker has nominated or placed as well.
“The only way to describe this is outrage,” said Jim Wallace, Executive Director of GOAL. “There is no way that anyone connected to the historical July 20th attack on civil rights and due process should ever be considered for a judicial position. How could they be trusted to protect Massachusetts families as a judge when they took part in an historic, politically motivated attack against them?”
GOAL is calling on Governor Baker to withdraw any current judicial nominations that have come from the Attorney General’s staff. GOAL is also calling on the members of the Governor’s Council to decline these nominations.
Please contact Governor Baker – Call his office first, then send him a letter via USPS. Let him know that you do not appreciate him appointing people to judgeship who took part in attacking our civil rights. Ask that he withdraw his nomination of Christopher Barry-Smith and any other person who he has nominated from Healey’s office. How can we expect a fair trial from anyone who took part in, or supported that attack?
